Overreactions and Reality Checks

The boys open the show talking about the overreactions around the NHL. While the focus was on the New Jersey Devils and their poor start, the San Jose Sharks, and Tampa Bay Lightning are in similar situations. While a team like the Carolina Hurricanes are proving they are the real deal. Even though it is a week into the season, there are some troubling trends for the Devils, Sharks, and Lightning. The Sharks tried to correct their problem offensively with the signing of Patrick Marleau. The Lightning had captain Steven Stamkos call them out for their poor play. While the Devils may lack the talent to win on talent alone.

Future of John Hynes

With the way the Devils have been playing Joe brings up the potential of John Hynes on the hot seat. He mentions that Hynes’s message is getting lost in the shuffle. Jim mentions how under his leadership, the team is not making the proper in-game adjustments. He goes on to say that the Devils look lost and disinterested especially when they are trailing in games. The Devils look unprepared and their lack of execution is quite evident. Jim and Joe give their lists on who would succeed Hynes if the Devils made a coaching change.

Coaches on the Hot Seat

Before diving into the segment, the boys preface by saying they are not calling for anyone’s job, but given some of the slower starts, who are the coaches potentially on the hot seat. Joe brings up the odds list that Sean Shapiro of The Athletic put on Twitter via BetOnline.com. Ahead of Hynes on the list was Jim Montgomery of the Dallas Stars, and also Paul Maurice of the Winnipeg Jets. Jim notes with the Jets, it is not fair to put Maurice there because of the changes on defence the Jets have gone through. The boys note that some of the guys on the list just got to their new positions and should not be on the list.

No Lead is Safe

Jim mentions if you look around the league, no lead is safe and teams are competing regardless of what the score is. The game is not over until the final horn goes off as Joe wisely mentions. Jim notes that teams like the Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, the Jets, Calgary Flames are erasing leads. Meanwhile, the Devils give up once the lead stretches beyond two goals. How come other teams have more fight than the Devils?

Finally, Jim just wanted people to know to come out and support the 1st Responders vs. Bravest Charity Hockey Event to support Tower to Tunnels on November 2, 2019. Details here.
