‘Fee Agreed’ – Fabrizio Romano Reveals the Latest on Manchester United’s Pursuit of ‘World-Class’ Star

Fabrizio Romano has once again spoken out on the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga. The transfer insider confirmed that a fee has been agreed between Barcelona and Manchester United, but also discussed the deal’s difficulties. De Jong prefers Barcelona to Manchester and would like to stay in Spain, while United’s inability to offer Champions League football next season also makes them a less attractive option. Couple that with the Dutchman’s complex contractual situation needing to be paid back around £17 million in deferred wages and this deal looks more and more difficult for Erik ten Hag’s side.

De Jong has been described as “world-class” and is undoubtedly a top midfielder, and as such the Red Devils are desperate for his signature. They have fought hard throughout this transfer window, but with the situation looking difficult, it could be time to explore other options before making a final decision.

United’s Midfield Issues

Manchester United have struggled in the middle of midfield for some time.

Over the last three seasons, they have formed pivots from two of the following players: Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Fred, and Scott McTominay, with Donny van de Beek also an option, although largely unused. Now, though, both Pogba and Matic have departed following the expiry of their contracts, and United now have a decision to make.

It is absolutely imperative that they bring in another midfielder this summer if they want to return to the top of the game. Fred and McTominay are by no means the best duo in the middle of the park, but for them to be backed up by Van de Beek, who is yet to show many signs that he can hack it in the English top flight, and James Garner, who has never before started a Premier League game, could prove disastrous.
