John Terry Returns to Chelsea in Coaching Role

Club legend and former captain John Terry has returned to Chelsea to work with the academy team on a part time basis four years after leaving the club. The role has been described as a coaching consultancy role where he will look to unearth new talent just as he was found when he began his journey as a schoolboy.

Terry was at Chelsea for two decades until he left and joined Aston Villa as a coach. He left that role in 2021 with rumours linking him with the then vacant managers job at Newcastle United, a role that eventually went to Eddie Howe.

Terry was a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s success, playing over 700 times and seeing a deluge of trophies, including five Premier League titles and Champions League success in 2012 -although he did not play as he was suspended for the final. He famously took off his tracksuit when Chelsea won to reveal his full kit underneath as he joined his teammates to celebrate winning Europe’s main club prize.

Official Club Statement on John Terry Chelsea Return

The official club website explained how Terry would work with the development programme:

“As well as delivering on-field coaching, our former club captain will contribute to coaching discussions with colleagues, mentor Academy players and support parent dialogue. He will begin the role in a part-time capacity at the start of next month. This flexibility is beneficial for both John and the Academy, as it allows him to continue to develop his own coaching skills alongside other commitments, while being used optimally within our development programme.”

Terry is keen to make his mark in coaching and management and Chelsea will not stand in his way should any new opportunities arise. The coaching role is flexible enough to allow him to leave should the situation come to the fore.
