Former Newcastle United, West Ham United and England midfielder Kieron Dyer will undergo a liver transplant after managing problems with his liver for a few years.
The 42-year-old, who is in charge of Ipswich Town’s U23 side, has been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare condition that if left untreated, can lead to liver failure and can even be fatal.

About the Diagnosis
Dyer spoke in a statement released by Ipswich Town on Sunday: “Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a condition of the liver a couple of years ago, that would lead to me one day needing a transplant.
“Over the next week, test results will confirm when I need to go through this procedure.”
Dyer also said that he sees himself “as a positive person that will overcome this minor setback.”
“I would like to ask everyone now to respect my privacy and my family’s privacy.”
“I’m very grateful to the club, the supporters and the general public for their messages of support over the past week.”
Ipswich Town have also released a statement about the situation: “Kieron has been managing problems with his liver for the past couple of years, and now requires a transplant.
“The best wishes of everyone at Ipswich Town Football Club remain with Kieron and his family.”
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins
Last month, Dyer took part in the Channel 4 series, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, but withdrew for medical reasons.
This happened while the celebrities were wrestling as a challenge, with Dyer cracking his rib in a fight with another contestant.
When the accident happened, Dyer said he “just couldn’t breathe”, his cracked rib turned into a collapsed lung.
The dad of two struggled to take a breath, likening the pain to that of being strangled or drowning.
Dyer’s Playing Days
Dyer was born and raised in Ipswich, where he started playing football for Ipswich Town at 17-years-old
Dyer went on to make almost 100 appearances for the club before signing for Newcastle United for £6 million – Ipswich’s club record fee at the time.
Over the course of eight years with the Magpies, Dyer made 250 appearances.
Possibly his most notable achievement was his involvement in the 2002/03 PFA Team of the Year, with Dyer earning a spot on a team that included Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Paul Scholes.
After his eight years at Newcastle, Dyer joined West Ham, again for a sum of £6 million. Dyer spent four years with The Hammers, but only made 35 appearances due to injuries.
in the 2010/11 season, Dyer returned to his boyhood club, spending one season at Ipswich Town. He then finished his playing career with a season-long stint at Queens Park Rangers and finishing at Middlesbrough.
