Despite recent speculation, an Antoine Griezmann Premier League move is looking increasingly unlikely this summer. Instead, according to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, a swap deal with Atletico Madrid for Saul Niguez is being discussed. The deal would see Griezmann return to his former club and the current La Liga champions with Saul going the other way.
The deal would make sense for Barcelona considering their current inability to match the La Liga wage limit. As it stands, Griezmann earns approximately €25 million per season at Barcelona. In comparison, at Atletico Madrid, Saul earns €14.4 million, according to Sportekz.
The difference in wage is astonishing and exposes Barcelona’s issue for all to see. Griezmann is 30 and earns substantially more than 26-year-old Saul despite entering the conclusion of his prime.
Antoine Griezmann Premier League Move Unlikely
Saul Move is One Worth Pursuing
The biggest shock about Barcelona’s links with Saul is how long they’ve taken. The midfielder has been at the top of his game as one of the best midfielder’s in La Liga for a good few years now. Given his lesser wage, Barcelona would’ve been smart to pursue a deal before their wage bill landed them in hot water. Nonetheless, a deal looks like it could finally be made this summer.
Ultimately, the deal will come down to whether Barcelona want to risk strengthening Atletico Madrid who already have Luis Suarez at their disposal. Should they acquire Griezmann, the champions will have one of the best strike partnerships in the league.
On the other hand, however, if Barcelona secure Saul, they’ll have one of the best midfield partnerships in the division with Frenkie de Jong next to Saul. It is a risky move to make, but one they may have no choice but to make. Antoine Griezmann is unlikely to move to the Premier League and Barcelona need to lessen their wage bill. The only way to do that may be the reported swap deal with Atletico Madrid.
