Following Tuesday’s embarrassing defeat at the hands of Spezia, Roma have fired team manager Gianluca Gombar, as well as Global Sporting Officer Manolo Zubiria, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported.
The club is yet to make an official statement on the matter at the time of writing. However, club legend Daniele De Rossi has confirmed the numerous claims in an Instagram post thanking Gombar for his help.
Their sackings come after yet another managerial mistake by the club, due to an illegal sixth substitution made during their loss in the Coppa Italia.
Roma Fire Gianluca Gombar and Manolo Zubiria
Second Mistake
This decision is not surprising, as this is the second time Roma have made this kind of mistake just this season. On the very first matchday, 23-year-old midfielder Diawara was registered as an U22 on the teamsheet. This error cost them the game, forfeiting 3-0 against Hellas Verona.
New owner Dan Friedkin can’t risk another unprofessional mistake as his team is fighting to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season. Gianluca Gombar had been at Roma for nearly eight years, occupying many roles at the club. His spell as team manager comes to an end after a year and a half.
Many Roma fans thought that the loss against Spezia could mean the end for manager Paulo Fonseca, who has been under pressure in the last month. This isn’t the case yet, and the Portuguese coach will have the chance for redemption on Saturday, as Roma will once again face Spezia in the league.
Roma Players Unhappy With the Decision
Early reports by the Corriere dello Sport say the players were unhappy with the decision and have confronted Fonseca, requesting the reinstatement of Gianluca Gombar. The discussions were allegedly lead by Edin Dzeko and Lorenzo Pellegrini. This is so far all speculations, and more news should come out soon as the club will have to break its silence on the matter.
