Sheffield United’s season seems to be going more and more downhill by the week, and, to make matters worse, Chris Wilder has provided a disappointing injury update ahead of the Boxing Day clash against Everton.
The Blades boss revealed the growing injury list, saying: “Oli (McBurnie) is really touch and go for the next 3 games. Lys had a reaction last week to his ankle. He’s not really in a position to start. Sander had an operation on his tendon. A huge blow for us with him being out between 3/4 months.”
The news of Sander Berge’s lengthy absence will undoubtedly provide Chris Wilder with the biggest blow entering a crucial part of the season, in which they must pick up some much-needed points.

John Lundstram Expected to Stay
Wilder also revealed during his press conference ahead of the Everton game that he expects midfielder John Lundstram to stay put in January, saying: “There’s been no enquiries for John Lundstram. Of course, losing Sander is a huge blow for us and John plays in that position. I don’t think John moves in this window. His attitude has been good.”
The midfielder’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2021, leaving the door open for a pre-contract arrangement in January which would see him complete a move in the summer.
For now, though, it seems Lundstram is set to see the season out and stay put with Berge set to be out for an extended period. The news will be music to Sheffield United fans’ ears as they look to do the impossible and escape the dreaded drop.
As it stands, the Blades are bottom of the league- ten points adrift of safety- and looking increasingly likely of suffering relegation back down to the Championship.
Loan Arrivals Expected
Wilder also revealed United’s January transfer plans of bringing in a couple of players on loan, saying: “The two are going to be loan signings. That’s the market we’re looking in. The time now is to bring a couple of players in who go straight in and improve the team.”
