After picking up an injury during England training, Joe Gomez is expected to miss a significant remainder of the 20/21 Premier League season to further add to Liverpool’s defensive blows in their first-ever Premier League title defence. The Englishman now joins defensive counterpart Virgil van Dijk in the physio’s room as both look to recover from long-term setbacks, leaving Liverpool lacking when it comes to centre-back options.
Gomez Expected to Miss Significant Remainder of Season
Liverpool Statement Regarding Joe Gomez
Since the news, Liverpool have released an updated statement on the injury via the official club website, which reads: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm Joe Gomez has today undergone successful surgery to repair a tendon in his left knee.
“The centre-back sustained the injury during a training session with the England national team on Wednesday.
The issue was isolated to Gomez’s tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments.
“The operation to correct the damage, which took place in London on Thursday morning, was a success and the 23-year-old will make a full recovery.
“Gomez will begin a rehabilitation programme with the Reds’ medical team immediately, with club staff carefully monitoring his progress.
No timescale is being placed upon his return, though the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.”
January Reinforcements to Come?
With just one senior centre-back in Joel Matip currently available to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool may be forced to turn to the January transfer window for reinforcements to ensure a successful title defence.
And, according to Jan Aage Fjortoft, that defensive reinforcement could come in the form of RB Leipzig’s Dayoyt Upamecano. Fjortoft reports that all of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool are following the defender, who has a release clause as low as £42 million, closely ahead of a potential January move.
