At times last season, Chelsea’s ruthless attacking play did well to hide their defensive frailties. Against Liverpool in the penultimate game of the season, however, the top four finishers were exposed. Frank Lampard’s side conceded five goals against the champions, taking their total tally of goals conceded in the Premier League to 54, the most in the top six.
So, with that in mind, Frank Lampard has set off in pursuit of defensive reinforcements despite already splashing the cash on Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. Price may not be an issue for the Chelsea boss, though, who has reportedly been offered the chance to sign Thiago Silva on a free.
According to the Telegraph, the Paris Saint-Germain defender, who will leave a free agent after the Champions League final, has been offered to Chelsea this summer.
REPORT: Thiago Silva an Option for Chelsea
Silva Could Bring Much Needed Experience to Chelsea Backline
Out of the Chelsea backline, only César Azpilicueta and Toni Rüdiger hold the experience necessary to lead. Andreas Christensen is 24; Kurt Zouma, 25; Fikayo Tomori, even younger at 22, and Reece James, the youngest, is 20.
It’s no wonder the Chelsea defence struggled last season. They lacked that imposing leader at the back. Azpilicueta and Rudiger tried to take up that role with each passing week, but sometimes failed to do an adequate job. Rudiger, in particular, struggled last season and was at fault for several defensive mishaps.
Getting a centre-back of Silva’s calibre, even at 35, is a bargain deal, and one Chelsea must look towards as a good option this summer.
Still Capable of Playing at the Top
Usually, when a player reaches their mid-30s, teams begin to stray away from any potential transfer. On this occasion, however, teams’ around Europe must not make this mistake with Thiago Silva. The Brazilian has just played a vital part in taking PSG to the Champions League final. There is no better evidence of his remaining ability than that.
Wherever he ends up, Thiago Silva will provide any club with defensive stability and the bargain of the summer.
