REPORT: Ronald Koeman Set to Become New Barcelona Manager

Koeman

After reports suggested the three candidates for the Barcelona job were Ronald Koeman, Mauricio Pochettino and Xavi, a decision has reportedly been made to pick one of the three. According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have opted to go for Ronald Koeman to take the vacant role in the Barcelona dugout.

Romano also stated that the current Netherlands manager will leave his role to join Barcelona. An official statement from Barcelona is expected to be made this week regarding the situation.

A Good Appointment?

If the reports are to be believed, Koeman will take the reigns at Barcelona ahead of the season. The Dutchman arrives with a plethora of experience having managed the likes of Ajax, the Dutch national team, and Southampton. His Southampton side, in particular, were impressive. The Dutchman guided a team meant for mid-table stagnation towards the hope of European qualification.

On top of this, too, Koeman once graced the pitch of the Nou Camp himself as a player and the technical area as an assistant manager. The fact is, Barcelona will be getting an experienced manager who also knows the club itself. The potential appointment certainly seems a smart one.

Messi to Stay Under Koeman?

After reports emerged of Lionel Messi’s urge to leave Barcelona, many fans were quick to panic. With Koeman’s arrival, however, Messi may opt to stay put and help rebuild Barcelona. And that will be the key for Koeman. By keeping hold of star players, Koeman keeps the fans onside and results may follow.

One mistake he must avoid, though, is getting it wrong in the transfer market. Those before him did exactly that and were sacked not long after. This time around, instead of wasting millions on ageing players, Barcelona must invest for their future; they must avoid further decline.
