Finally, after a 30-year wait, Liverpool are Premier League title winners. After years of anguish, disappointment and heartbreak, Jurgen Klopp and co have reclaimed the throne and the ‘First Divison’ title that was once permanently owned by the likes of Kenny Dalglish and co.
Rafa Benitez tried with all his tactical might but failed. Brendan Rodgers attempted to instil great character but failed. So in came Jurgen Klopp, in came the passion. And then, the desire. Most importantly, in came the belief once again, a belief that transformed previous doubters. With that belief, that hunger for success, and ‘mentality monsters’ at his disposal, Jurgen Klopp now stands as the first-ever Liverpool manager to win the Premier League.
Heart, Desire and Leadership the Difference Maker in the Premier League Title Race
The City of Liverpool Unites in Premier League Title Win
Never has there been such a united feeling in the city of Liverpool. This is a feeling that, no matter what, this Liverpool side will come out on top. They lost the Champions League at the last hurdle in 2018 before coming out as winners in 2019.
They finished runners up with 97 points in 2019 behind Manchester City, only to win it with seven games to go this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side simply never give up; they combine passion, tactical genius, and leadership to form what is one of the best teams in Premier League history. And it’s that heart, desire and leadership that has been the difference-maker between Liverpool and Manchester City this season.
What Went Wrong for Manchester City
Manchester City are a fantastic, well oiled and, at times, unstoppable machine. But, that same machine sometimes lacks the heart to never give up. When a game turns scrappy, they don’t seem to have the ability to fight for the result.
They play some of the most elegant football, but sometimes, the ability to win ‘ugly’ is what’s needed. This is an ability that City have lacked this season. Even when Liverpool looked certain to lose at Villa Park, they scraped and clawed their way to victory. Meanwhile, City failed to show the same fight in season-defining defeats to Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.
Injuries have played their part, but the lack of leadership, desire and ability to step up in place of those injuries is what has cost Manchester City the most this season. Failing to replace Vincent Kompany will undoubtedly be looked back on with regret by Guardiola and co. It could even be said that with the Belgian, Liverpool celebrations wouldn’t be in full swing right now.
Perhaps this season has been a wake-up call for those in the blue side of Manchester to prepare to reclaim what was previously their title.
Sometimes, it takes the pain of losing to bounce back and win. Before this season, City hadn’t felt heartbreak in the Premier League title race; this was a new experience, an experience they clearly didn’t know how to deal with. Now they have experienced it, they will be keen to avoid it again.
Jurgen Klopp: A Liverpool Legend
As for Liverpool, this achievement will never be forgotten and could be the start of English dominance once again. What Jurgen Klopp has done in the space of four years is simply unprecedented and unmatched. He promised the Liverpool fans, they believed, and, he delivered.
