Manchester United today announced the appointment of Red Devils legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager. The Norwegian replaces Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday morning. United are currently sixth in the table. However, they are well off the pace for a title challenge or even a top four place.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Appointed Caretaker
Solskjaer has been named caretaker until the end of the season where United will look for a permanent manager. However, if he does well, especially in the Champions League, he could become a contender himself. Solskjaer has managed in the Premier League previously, having been in charge of Cardiff City.
Mike Phelan Returns
Former player and assistant manager Mike Phelan returns to the club also. Phelan played for United between 1989 and 1994 under Alex Ferguson. He worked as a coach before becoming assistant to Ferguson. He left the club after David Moyes took over. The former midfielder went on to manager Hull City and briefly Norwich City. Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna will continue to work with the first-team.
Solskjaer Happy to be Back
Solskjaer, the Red Devils legend and star of their Champions League triumph in 1999, is happy to back at Old Trafford. “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role,” Solskjaer told the United website after being confirmed in the role. “I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”
Woodward Believes
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward believes he has the right man “Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
