‘Likely To Fly Back To London’: Chelsea Face Surprising Setback In ‘Priceless’ Star’s Transfer

Chelsea Swap 'Inexperienced' Youngster for 'Superstar': 'Now Discussing'

Chelsea have been heavily active in the 2024 summer transfer window in terms of strengthening their squad ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season. They are also looking to sell players but it looks like their proposed sale of Conor Gallagher has hit a snag.

What Happened To The Gallagher Sale?

The English midfielder looked poised to be unveiled as a new Atletico Madrid midfielder after it was reported that that he had agreed terms for a move. Even though the Blues also reportedly verbally agreed to the transfer, that has not been able to go through yet because of certain complications.

The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports that Gallagher is “likely to fly back to London” unless a breakthrough on the proposed move to the La Liga heavyweights can be finalized soon. It’s stated that both clubs have told the midfielder that he should return home for his own well-being as he has been staying in a Madrid hotel for almost a week in anticipation of the transfer.

The 24-year-old has seen his move to Atletico Madrid being impacted after the Blues failed to complete the signing of Samu Omorodion from the Spanish heavyweights. Law states that unless the Premier League heavyweights can agree deal to sign Joao Felix or the La Liga side finds a suitor for Omorodion, Gallagher’s move to Diego Simeone’s side is in doubt.

Why Is Gallagher’s Transfer Being Delayed?

Atletico Madrid have been pursuing a move for Gallagher for quite a long time, but it appears that the actual signing of the midfielder depended on the Blues also signing a player from them. They have already made a blockbuster summer signing of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City in what is reportedly a club-record sale for the Premier League champions.

Simeone’s side needs to generate money from player sales to finalize Gallagher’s transfer and pay Chelsea the necessary fee. The 24-year-old midfielder, who was hailed as “priceless” last season, has not played any part in the Blues’ pre-season campaign under Enzo Maresca and doesn’t seem to have any future at his childhood club.
