After letting Gregg Berhalter go, following a disappointing Copa America, the USMNT have been searching for a new manager. Patrick Vieira is one of the names being considered.

Vieira ‘Being Discussed’

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Patrick Vieira is “under consideration” to become the new manager of the USA national team. However, there are numerous others (unnamed) in the same position. He is “one of the options being discussed”, but not the only one.

The Italian journalist continues to explain that there is “nothing advanced or close” about the deal; the Premier League “legend” is simply an option for the US Soccer Federation. Appointing one of Europe’s greats would be positive for the nation, though some fans won’t be happy with a foreign coach: since 1995, only Jürgen Klinsmann has had no American links.

Vieira Available Now

Other coaches that the USMNT have been linked with, like Herve Renard and Steven Cherundolo, are currently employed. Contrastingly, Vieira is completely available now.

Earlier today, July 17 2024, the manager parted ways with Chelsea’s sister club: RC Strasbourg. This means that there would not be any compensation pay, which can be quite costly for a national team with little income.

What Heights Can Vieira Help the USA Reach?

Following a disappointing Copa America, the team are now looking to the 2026 World Cup, which the USA will host. Vieira would surely be aiming to qualify from both the group-stage and the new Round of 32, perhaps even pushing for a Quarter-Final.

This is certainly achievable with a very talented young squad, including the likes of Giovanni Reyna, Folarin Balogun, and Haji Wright as goalscoring threats.

However, at every club except his first (New York City FC), the 48-year-old has been let go after disappointing performances caused by his inexperience. At Crystal Palace in particular, form was abysmal until Roy Hodgson took over and completely turned it on its head; the Eagles stayed up comfortably and were playing good football.

There is certainly potential for this appointment to be successful, but fans may be wary given Vieira’s inconsistent track record.
