How England Have Lined-up Recently

England have had identical backlines in their group-stage matches. Jordan Pickford has started in goal with Kyle Walker at right-back and Kieran Trippier at left-back. Marc Guehi has impressed alongside John Stones at centre-back.

Declan Rice had been partnered by Trent Alexander-Arnold in central midfield, though the Liverpool star was dropped for Conor Gallagher against Slovenia. Gallagher was then substituted for Kobbie Mainoo at half-time; we expect the Manchester United “star” to start against Slovakia.

Jude Bellingham has started as the ten with Phil Foden on the left-wing and Bukayo Saka on the right. Harry Kane is the striker and captain.

England’s Recent Form

England topped Group C, though won just one of their three matches. The performances were uninspiring and worried fans across the country.

Their biggest struggle was chance creation: Gareth Southgate’s side scored just twice and had an expected goals (XG) of 2.2. Only Serbia and Scotland generated less.

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Harry Kane have all struggled to work their magic in the system, despite being three of Europe’s most exciting players this past season.

On the other hand, England’s defence has been watertight. They conceded the lowest XG in the tournament with 1.1; Guehi and Stones were formidable at the back.

However, in a fairly easy group, this defensive record cannot be held in vastly great regard. Similarly, their attacking record is very worrying.

England Injuries to Consider

Luke Shaw has been injured since February, and Southgate admitted that taking him was a risk. Anthony Gordon revealed that Shaw is “progressing well actually, especially in the last week” but he is still yet to feature.

The rest of the squad are available for selection, though some key names like Harry Maguire are missing entirely.
