Chelsea have opened talks with Jonathan David for a potential move this Summer. The Canadian striker’s contract expires in June 2025, so he could be available for a cut price. However, plenty of clubs are also interested and the race could be open.
Chelsea Interested in Signing Jonathan David for a Cut Price
Good Relations with LOSC Lille
David Ornstein reports that Chelsea have held talks with representatives of David, ahead of a potential Summer move. No formal approach has been made just yet, but there are “good relations” between both clubs so a deal is very possible. The Lille president had previously confirmed this by saying that the player could “leave the club this Summer” and that he has been given an “exit voucher” due to his current contract situation. With a deal expiring in June 2025, the selling club may be forced to sell for a cut price as well.
Chelsea Continue to Chase New Attackers
This is far from the first striker Chelsea have contacted over a potential transfer this Summer. The London club have recently opened talks with Jhon Duran and Samu Omorodian as well. It is believed that they want to introduce two new attackers for next season, including “at least one more striker and one more winger”. With that in mind, it would be realistic to assume that only one of the three striker targets completes a move.
Considering the previous two options, Atletico Madrid have already rejected a “€40m package” for Omorodion, whilst Villa remains adamant on a player exchange for a deal for Duran to materialize. As such, it may be possible that the Blues turn to Ligue 1 instead to explore a transfer for David – such a deal could be much easier to finalise, and potentially much cheaper given the player’s contract situation.
David’s Search for a New Club
Since the Summer of 2022, David has reportedly been “on the market” in search of a new club. Many European outlets have been linked with the 24-year-old since then, including Arsenal, RB Leipzig, Barcelona and AC Milan. Despite that, a move has continuously failed to materialize.

It is tough to doubt the player’s experience though; he has broken records during his time at Lille, becoming the club’s leading goal-scorer in the entire Ligue 1 era with 84 goals. Last season, he scored an impressive 26 in 47 games across all competitions, in addition to 7 assists. He is well regarded for his versatility up front, being able to play as a lone centre-forward or a second striker. Perhaps this is the window he finally gets his big Summer move, and Chelsea’s interest could be a good opportunity to consider.
