Arsenal had a busy summer in 2023 signing the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and David Raya. According to a recent report from Samuel Luckhurst of Manchester Evening News, the Gunners had almost signed Rice’s close friend Mason Mount, before he chose to join Manchester United.

‘Deal Was All but Done’
Luckhurst adds that Mikel Arteta was reportedly telling his confidants that a deal was all but done for Mason Mount. Apparently, Liverpool and Arsenal were chasing the England international’s signature last summer when his departure from Chelsea was imminent.
The Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp also contacted the player and his representatives in January 2023. However, both the Gunners and Liverpool could not agree to a deal with the midfielder and instead signed Kai Havertz and Dominik Szoboszlai respectively.
Mount went on to sign with the side from Old Trafford and also took the famous No.7 jersey previously worn by club icons like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, and George Best.
How Was Mason Mount Fared at Manchester United Since His Big Move?
The Englishman who was signed by the Red Devils for £55 million has had a poor start to his career in Manchester. The midfielder has made 12 appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side across all competitions and only has a lone assist to show for it.
In addition to this, an injury sustained in November in a league game against Luton Town has kept the 25-year-old out of action for more than four months. He is expected to make a return to the pitch shortly after recovering from the injury and training with the team.

It remains to be seen if the midfielder who was once hailed as “unbelievable” for his performances at Chelsea can rediscover his form. Additionally, both Arsenal and Liverpool are in the midst of a tight title race thanks largely to the signings they made last summer.
We can never really know how different things could have been, had Mason Mount chosen to sign with either of the other two teams in red.
