‘Scouted Extensively’: Newcastle United Linked with Nottingham Forest Man

Liverpool and newcastle players watch on as a shot heads towards goal

Newcastle United have set their sights on Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White if the sale of Miguel Almiron goes through, according to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph. Al Shabab of the Saudi Pro League recently registered a concrete interest in Almiron after Newcastle United’s chief executive, Darren Earles, suggested that the club are looking to sell players to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Deal Unlikely in January

Edwards has revealed that if Newcastle United receive a reasonable fee for Almiron, then Gibbs-White will be pursued up until the end of the January transfer window. The English attacking midfielder has been “scouted extensively” by Newcastle’s recruitment team for months. However, there is an acknowledgement that Nottingham Forest would be reluctant to let Gibbs-White move.

Amadou Onana has also been discussed as a potential transfer target for Newcastle, per Edwards. Everton are also set to dismiss any approach for the Belgian midfielder, with outgoings from Newcastle looking more likely.

Gibbs-White’s Situation at Forest

Gibbs-White is currently out with an abdominal injury, which he picked up in training before Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup Third Round replay away at Blackpool. However, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder has been a revelation since joining the Tricky Trees last summer, scoring seven and registering 11 assists, helping the East Midlands club narrowly avoid the drop in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Given that they were recently charged with breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, Forest’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, will be keen to keep Gibbs-White at the club given the potential for a points deduction later in the season.

The player’s contract expires on June 30, 2027, so if the club are to consider any bids, then it will have to be north of the £35 million fee they paid for the 23-year-old midfielder in August 2022.
