Still, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are one of several clubs pressuring the Reds to be at their very best. James Pearce of The Athletic has reported that the club officials are targeting one key position to boost their title hopes.

Is Sporting’s Goncalo Inacio the Ideal Candidate?
The Englishman stated that Liverpool would look for a defender in this month’s transfer window while writing for The Athletic. The Reds were preparing to acquire a centre-back over the summer, but Pearce stated that “bringing that plan forward six months would certainly provide a boost to the club’s title challenge.” Finding a player that fits the club’s playing style, however, will not be so easy.

Liverpool are believed to be in the market for a young footballer. Pearce noted that the Reds “would be looking for someone aged 23 or under.” One such centre-back Klopp’s club has been linked to is Sporting CP player Goncalo Inacio. His release clause, should the Merseyside outfit choose to bid for him, is “around £52 million.”

Injury Crisis at the Backline
Klopp is down several starters in defence. Joel Matip has been out since an early December victory over Fulham. According to Liverpool’s official club website, there is no timescale placed on his recovery. The same injury report noted that left-back Andy Robertson, who was sidelined with an injury picked up in October, will have a tough time returning to match fitness anytime soon.

Liverpool will have consecutive fixtures in domestic cups before returning to Premier League action against Bournemouth on the 21st of January. An already good season for Klopp and his squad of talented footballers could turn into a great one if they acquire a defender who can help lead them to another Premier League title.
