It was an on-and-off transfer saga throughout the majority of deadline day. Reports suggested that the striker failed his medical; however, these were wide of the mark.
27-year-old Ross Stewart has not played since January when he was injured in a FA Cup game at Fulham. However, he is expected to be back in action in around a month. The Scotland international played just 13 games last season but scored 10 goals.
The Saints were also interested in the Black Cats winger Patrick Roberts having offered up to £5 million on Thursday evening. Sunderland stated that the offer was well below their valuation, therefore a deal is now looking unlikely at this stage of transfer deadline day.
Ross Stewart on Moving to Southampton From Sunderland
Ross Stewart spoke to the Southampton official website shortly after signing from Sunderland. The striker said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been a really long day, but it’s been really good too. In the end, I’m delighted to get everything done in time and I can move forward now.
“Southampton is a massive club. In recent years it’s been a Premier League club and for me it’s a great challenge to come down here and play football for a team that’s going to be competing at the top of the league.”
Saints Director of Football on New Signing
Director of Football Jason Wilcox said: “Ross is a really dynamic and intelligent player, so we’re delighted to have added him to the group.
“His form and development over the past couple of seasons have been very impressive, and we’re confident this will be a great place for him to continue that.
“He’s got a fantastic work-rate and he’s a great character too, so we believe he’ll be a really popular addition and an excellent fit for us.”
