Manchester United are expected to complete a deal to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana before leaving for their pre-season tour of the USA, claims BBC’s Simon Stone. The Red Devils are in the market for a new goalkeeper after David de Gea was allowed to leave as a free agent.

When Could Onana Become a United Player?

Erik ten Hag has already signed Mason Mount in the 2023 summer window. He is also on the lookout for a new first-choice goalkeeper and seems to have found an ideal target in Onana, who played under him at Ajax.

Stone has stated he would be surprised if the Cameroonian wasn’t unveiled as a new United player soon. He said on the Stretford Paddock podcast: “I’d be staggered if Onana doesn’t happen and I’ll be staggered if it doesn’t happen before Manchester United go to the U.S.”

This is a major claim, indicating confidence that the Manchester giants should wrap up this deal shortly. The 27-year-old goalkeeper is reported to be valued between £40 million to £50 million by Inter Milan and the Premier League heavyweights are still trying to agree a fee with the Nerazzurri over this deal.

Can Onana Fill De Gea’s Shoes at Old Trafford?

If he completes his move to Old Trafford soon, Onana will have a daunting task ahead of him. He would be replacing De Gea – the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for 12 years.

The Cameroon international is a confident goalkeeper who rarely looks flustered. He kept 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances in his debut campaign for Inter, including eight in the Champions League to help them to the final. Onana was hailed as “top class” by ex-United captain Rio Ferdinand after helping his side defeat AC Milan in the Champions League semi-finals – who also praised his passing ability and ability to play through the opposition press. He seems to have the skills to be a worthy successor to the departed Spaniard, but it remains to be seen if the deal can be finalised before the Reds depart on their pre-season tour.
