However, Romano adds that Lindelof is considered as an ‘untouchable’ by Erik ten Hag after he started performing brightly under him towards the end of last season. It is further stated that United rejected offers from Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan in the January transfer window when they started enquiring over the possibility of signing him.

The Italian journalist rubbished claims that Eintracht Frankfurt held talks with the Red Devils to sign the Swedish centre-back, noting that they were never in the race to do so. He also reports that Inter and Atletico at least showed genuine interest, but currently have no chance of signing him after the centre-back – who was signed for £31 million in 2017 from Benfica –  managed to win over the Dutch coach at Old Trafford.

When it comes to a backline reshuffle,  Harry Maguire has been linked with an exit and is reportedly a target for Tottenham Hotspur.  The club are also reportedly looking to sell goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest – while other loanees Eric Bailly and Alex Telles are also said to be on the chopping block. Lindelof, however, seems to be safe for the time being after making 35 appearances for the Red Devils last season.
