‘Part of the Project’: Chelsea Tie ‘Very Important’ Defender to New Contract

Chelsea have announced that Ben Chilwell has signed a new two-year extension to his current deal. This new agreement ties the defender to the club until June 2027, having joined them from Leicester City in 2020.

Even though the left-back has struggled with occasional injury issues at Stamford Bridge, Chilwell has become a pretty important part of the squad in the different systems of all the managers he’s played at the club.

Chilwell opened up on his thoughts on the contract extension and said: “I feel very settled at Chelsea and have really enjoyed my time on the pitch here so I’m very pleased the club want me to be part of the project long-term, and am very happy to sign this extension to my contract.

“We are working hard for success and I will do my best to bring more smiles to the faces of the fans who have made me feel so welcome.”

After signing this contract extension, Chilwell should put to bed the reports that claimed that Manchester City were interested in signing him in the summer window and placed him on their transfer shortlist.

Chilwell’s Career So Far at Chelsea

Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2020 after excelling at Leicester City in the Premier League. The 26-year-old has gone on to make 80 appearances across the last three seasons, scoring nine goals and notching 12 assists with the Blues.

He was also a key part of their 2020/21 Champions League side, producing a brilliant performance in the final against Manchester City. Chilwell also went on to win the 2021 UEFA Super Cup with them, as well as being a part of England’s Euro 2020 runners-up squad. He was hailed as a ‘very important’ player in the Chelsea side by former manager Thomas Tuchel a few years ago and has made 26 appearances this season, scoring two goals and providing four assists.
