Chelsea have begun talks with Borussia Monchengladbach over the possibility of signing striker Marcus Thuram in January, confirms Fabrizio Romano. The Blues have already signed three players in the winter transfer window, but are looking to further bolster their squad with a new forward.

Chelsea Exploring Conditions of Thuram Deal
The London side does not appear to be over with their winter transfer window. Romano adds that Todd Boehly & co are now having discussions with the German club and trying to learn the price tag as well as what kind of conditions need to be met for them to sign him.
Chelsea appreciates the qualities of Marcus Thuram and he is one of the players on their list of options for a new no.9, Romano also states. All they are doing right now is waiting for the Bundesliga side to create a price for the Frenchman, being aware that he will be a free agent in six months – with his current deal set to expire in June.

However, Graham Potter’s side also faces competition for the striker – with the likes of Aston Villa and Inter Milan both interested in Thuram, Romano also adds. This deal is also not really linked to their reported pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk winger, Mykhailo Mudryk.

Chelsea have had a really disappointing start to 2023, having been unable to win either of their first two games and suffering a bitter 1-0 loss to Manchester City earlier this week. To make things worse, Potter is also having to endure a serious injury crisis in the squad – with as many as 11 first-team players on the treatment table.
Raheem Sterling got injured against Manchester City and Mason Mount also missed it due to issues. Armando Broja is out for the rest of the season, while Christian Pulisic also suffered a knock in the last game. That is why Chelsea are trying to secure the signing of another forward who can inspire some life into their frontline.

Thuram can be a smart signing if the Blues are able to get the deal over the line. The 25-year-old – who is the son of ex-Chelsea defender Lillian Thuram – was dubbed a ‘world-class striker’ by Wolfsburg sporting director, Marcel Schafer, last year. He’s scored 13 goals in 17 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach this season and even impressed for France at the World Cup, registering two assists – including one in the final against Argentina.
