Plymouth Argyle Secure Sunderland Midfielder on Loan in Massive Coup

Jay Matete

The Plymouth Argyle media team have been busy this week, with a fourth new arrival having been announced. Whereas a trio of permanent moves have preceded, this one is just on loan for the rest of the season. Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete is the man in question, a very capable player indeed.

All about the New Arrival

Argyle’s recruitment this month continues to be geared towards bringing youngsters in. New Zealand forward Ben Waine is just age 21 whilst Callum Wright, who joined from Blackpool, is just one year his senior.

Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete is no different, being in the early stages of his own career. He put in a very strong performance for the Black Cats against Plymouth Argyle last year and so fans of the latter are already familiar with his capabilities.

Matete got his first taste of EFL action at Fleetwood Town. He gained some solid experience in League One then as well as a brief loan stint in the division below with Grimsby Town. The midfielder has never been a prolific scorer with no goals to his name in a Sunderland shirt and his best return being three, whilst with Grimsby.

How Will Steven Schumacher Utilise the Sunderland Midfielder?

Losing loan star Morgan Whittaker is a major blow to the Pilgrims, with the one positive being a spot for another player. Matete is the man to fill that hole, coming alongside Bali Mumba, Nigel Lonwijk, Finn Azaz and Sam Cosgrove as the fifth loanee allowed.

The middle of the park is a fascinating proposition under the stewardship of Steven Schumacher. Jordan Houghton and Adam Randell have been the go-to duo when it is a two-man unit. The Sunderland midfielder is certainly good enough to go straight in there, but the question arises of who he will replace.

Randell has previously spoken of a comfortability when going forward and has already added goals to his name to back this up, with three in the league and four assists too. Playing Matete could allow the academy graduate to go further up the field.

Either way, the loan signing of Jay Matete is an excellent one, as is being said by all Sunderland supporters. This is another sign of intent from the powers that be – they really do mean business.
