Manchester United have received a setback in their quest of signing a new goalkeeper as target Diogo Costa has signed a new long-term contract with FC Porto. FC Porto Add Huge Release Clause to Costa’s Deal

The 23-year-old goalkeeper has decided to repay the faith shown in him by Porto by agreeing to a new contract with them. Costa has signed a new five-year deal that will expire in June 2027. The Portuguese giants have also made the decision to add a release clause into his new contract, which ensures them a major pay-day in case any club is desperate enough to pay it to sign him.

Porto have added a £65.5 million release clause to the deal to bolster their chances of hanging onto Costa for years to come. To be clear, if a side like United wants to sign him over the next few years, they will have to make him one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time.

Costa’s Impressive Rise Recapped

The Portuguese goalkeeper has been in impressive form for FC Porto this season, having kept eight clean sheets in 17 appearances – including three in the Champions League. He has only conceded 15 goals in all competitions and was particularly impressive in wins over Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen in the group-stage encounters.

His rise at the Portuguese club has not gone unnoticed. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper and World Cup-winning captain Iker Casillas has stated that the 23-year-old is “becoming a world-class goalkeeper.

He is expected to be part of Portugal’s Qatar World Cup squad and is in contention to start the first game since he impressed during the playoff semi-final vs Turkey. The 23-year-old’s impressive development is why United are interested in signing him – despite having recently confirmed the loan signing of Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United.
