Chelsea have formally opened talks with Mason Mount’s representatives over a new long-term contract, reports The Guardian. The England international’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in 2024, but he wants to remain at his boyhood club for the long term.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been associated with the London side since he was a teenager and has come up from their youth academy as well. He is rated very highly by those at the club and regarded as a pivotal part of their long-term process under Graham Potter and Todd Boehly.
Sky Sports add (via their transfer centre on 12/10/22) that Chelsea want to reward Mount with a multi-year, long-term contract. It could be akin to the seven-year contract extension which they handed to Armando Broja recently and the six-year deal to Reece James last month.
The Guardian say that this new contract could result in a ‘big pay rise’ for Mount. They claim that the midfielder could ask for double his current wage of £75,000 a week.

The Englishman has seen his form improve after the arrival of Potter. He was influential in his side’s 2-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, winning a penalty as well as assisting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s strike as well. He won the Man of the Match award for his heroics and seems to be really enjoying himself under the new system.

Ever since getting his breakthrough at Chelsea under Frank Lampard in 2019, Mount has soared to become one of the Blue’s most important players. Mount’s versatility and creativity not only delight the eye but have brought much success to his club and country.
The 23-year-old has won the Champions League title and played a pivotal role in the Blue’s triumph in the 2020/21 season, even assisting Kai Havertz’s winner in the final. He has earned 32 caps for the England national team, scoring 5 goals for them too.

The midfielder, who was called a ‘mad player’ by Rio Ferdinand earlier this year, has made 172 appearances for the London side in his career, scoring 30 goals and providing 36 assists. It looks like that will only get better as the club are trying to get him locked on a big long-term contract to stay at Stamford Bridge for the peak years of his career.
