The Premier League returned to TV screens and football pitches around the country this weekend. That being said, the transfer window is still far from over. Several teams have various players on their radars and Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of them. As per Fabrizio Romano, a “long-term contract” has been agreed for Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes from Valencia.

Portuguese Winger Joining Fellow Countrymen at Molineux
There is a long trail of Portuguese roots running through Wolves due to the impact of super-agent Jorge Mendes. The likes of Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves are being linked with moves away from the club, whilst there is a new face coming in. Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes has himself long-since been spoken about as a potential departee from Valencia.
The aforementioned Neto excelled on the opening day even though Bruno Lage’s side were defeated 2-1 by Leeds United. Jesse Marsch’s men earned three points thanks to goals from Rodrigo Moreno, a former teammate of Guedes’ with Valencia, and USMNT international Brenden Aaronson. Despite the attacking impetus from Neto, Morgan Gibbs-White and co, there is a lack of an out-and-out striker. Raul Jimenez’s injury issues are there for all to see and this only leaves Hwang Hee-chan.

This doesn’t necessarily play a part in the arrival of the Portuguese winger, though. Guedes is exactly that, a winger. The 25-year-old is one of many very capable players who have had to leave Paris Saint-Germain so as to play regular football.
He has been the star at the Mestalla, alongside Ferran Torres and Carlos Soler, during his time there. That time has come to an end though as his move to the Premier League has reportedly been completed. “Long term contract agreed, €32m plus add-ons to Valencia” is the line from Fabrizio Romano.

Valencia’s Off-Field Issues Continue
Current Valencia manager Gennaro Gattuso has seemed pretty resigned to the loss of the Portuguese winger for a while now. Problems with the hierarchy have seen several perfectly competent managers struggle in La Liga. Gattuso has had issues of his own so far as a manager and it seems things won’t get any easier for him at the Mestalla.
Talk remains of who they could bring on board, but it points more towards outgoings. Back in January, there were rumours of a few Tottenham Hotspur players being close to moving to Spain. Bryan Gil did make the move on loan whilst Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele moved elsewhere.
Wolves weren’t the most clinical side in the attacking third last term and there are few signs of that improving just yet. At the same time, the arrival of Goncalo Guedes for a sizeable fee is certainly a step in the right direction.
