Chelsea Defender Levi Colwill in Brighton Transfer
The youngster played a full season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield last year, playing 29 times as the side narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League. Colwill will want to forget the play-off final, however, as the defender’s own goal saw Nottingham Forest return to the top flight.
Colwill is highly regarded by Graham Potter and the Brighton board. Earlier this week, David Ornstein reported that the youngster is Brighton’s top target. His signature is said to have been central to Cucurella making the switch to Chelsea.
Cucurella had been heavily linked with a move to Premier League champions, Manchester City. But Chelsea appears to have hijacked the move, snatching the ex-Barcelona man at the eleventh hour. The signing wasn’t without controversy, however. Brighton put a statement on their official Twitter account condemning the reports as false. Romano remains confident in the deal, having included it in his Daily Briefing for August 4.
Colwill could plug the gap left by Cucurella. A natural centre-back, Colwill has also made a handful of appearances at left back, including as captain of the England U19’s. Any deal for the young defender is expected to include a buy back clause for the West London side.
Colwill would be the latest move in an interesting transfer window at the AMEX Stadium. Cucurella and Yves Bissouma depart the club, leaving substantial gaps in the first team squad. Meanwhile, youngsters Julio Enciso and Simon Adingra join from Paraguay and Denmark, respectively.
Only time will tell if the youth policy employed on the South Coast will be enough to survive the Premier League.
Been told Chelsea will have a buy back clause in Levi Colwill deal with Brighton, this is a key point of the negotiation now set to be completed. 🚨🔵 #CFC
