In a major Frenkie de Jong future update, it has emerged that Manchester United are close to securing his signature. According to Gerard Romero, a deal between United and Barcelona is “95% done”.
Romero stated that de Jong will likely be sold due to Barcelona’s financial situation. The Catalan club would receive between €70-€80 million for the Dutch midfielder.
Frenkie de Jong Future: Manchester United Move Likely
Potential Reunion with Ten Hag
The Red Devils look set to sign the former Ajax player, who will reunite with his former boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
De Jong was a part of the side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season. Barcelona signed the 24-year-old in 2019 for a fee of €90 million.
Despite an impressive first season at Camp Nou, De Jong has struggled for consistency this season. La Masia stars Pedri and Gavi have often started ahead of him in midfield.
Manchester United Rebuild Beginning To Take Place
After a disastrous season, United look set for another rebuild. With the likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matić all leaving the club, the Manchester club will be keen to sign appropriate replacements.
Along with De Jong, Erik ten Hag is said to be interested in bringing in Benfica forward Darwin Núñez as well as RB Leipzig full-back Nordi Mukiele.
It is also likely that Donny Van de Beek will be given a career revival at Old Trafford under Ten Hag after two seasons to forget with the club.
Frenkie De Jong Future Seemed to Be at Barcelona
Despite the rumours of a move to Bayern Munich, in March, De Jong spoke about how happy he was at Barcelona.
Speaking to Dutch TV network Ziggo, De Jong said: “I love being in Barcelona.
“I’d probably sign a six-year contract extension if they’d propose one to me, yes.
“Something happening with FC Bayern? No, no. I am so happy at Barcelona.
“I would love to play here for as long as possible.”
This is a transfer that could simply be out of De Jong’s hands, only time will tell. With Manchester City completing the signing of Erling Haaland this week, United will be keen to make a statement with a big signing of their own.
