Top Serie A midfielder, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, is expected to remain at Lazio. The 27-year-old Serbian star finds his name in rumours just about every single summer but continues to stay loyal to the Rome-based club. This presents a blow to other teams searching for a dominant and game-changing midfielder.
Top Serie A Midfielder to Remain at Lazio
The Club’s Most Important Midfielder
Lazio club president Claudio Lotito told Rai Sport, in quotes reported by Fabrizio Romano, that Milinkovic-Savic is indeed not for sale, he said: “Milinkovic is not for sale, I turned down €140m bid for him [years ago]”, Lotito said. “I’d ask Sergej what he wants to do only in case we receive an important proposal from a world-class top club.”
Clearly, €140 million is an extravagant amount. This is even more true for a club that doesn’t typically qualify for the Champions League. It shows the importance of the player to the club.
Milinkovic-Savic is enjoying arguably his best season yet at Lazio, at least in terms of statistics. In 35 Serie A appearances, the Serbian midfielder holds 10 goals and 11 assists to his name.
Last season, he had eight goals and 10 assists in 32 league appearances. His numbers have gone up, and at 27-years-old, he’s entering his prime years as a midfielder. Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile represent Lazio’s core, and Lotito is in no rush to give this up.
Lazio are currently in fifth place in the Serie A table. They are three points ahead of Roma, Fiorentina, and Atalanta. For the moment, Lazio is sitting in the driver’s seat when it comes to Europa League qualification. Juventus are seven points ahead of Lazio in fourth place, meaning Lazio is directly disqualified from possible Champions League participation next season.
Holding onto Milinkovic-Savic, however, only helps Lazio in a bid to qualify for the Champions League in future.
