Antonio Rudiger and Real Madrid reached a verbal agreement for the centre-back to join the club. Rudiger is set to join the Spanish giants on a long-term contract after his deal with Chelsea expires this summer.
Chelsea Defender Antonio Rudiger and Real Madrid Come to Verbal Agreement
Rudiger to Madrid
Real Madrid have likely sealed the signign of Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, as Fabrizo Romano reports. Romano states: “Real Madrid have reached verbal agreement with Antonio Rüdiger” adding “It’s gonna be a long-term deal. Final details to be discussed soon, before signing the contract.” This comes shortly after Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was quoted, as also reported by Romano, saying: “He wants to leave the club. He informed me in a private talk. We gave everything but we could not fight anymore because of the actions.”
What This Means for Madrid
Real Madrid needed another centre-back in the door this window. The departures of Raphael Varane and in particular Sergio Ramos last year left them with just 3 recognisable central defenders after signing David Alaba. Rudiger shores up the back line as well as bringing leadership and a winning pedigree.
It also is a sign of the times at Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappe could also come in this window on a free transfer. Madrid have been signing Galactico players for years now, with this recent turn in spending habits maybe Perez has tweaked his philosophy slightly to look for better deals.
What it Means for Chelsea
Deals are hard to come by for Chelsea. With the sanctions impacting the club at every turn, the London club will be eager to find a resolution so they can work out their summer business. Players like Rudiger and Andreas Christensen look set to leave the club without any recognisable replacements. Rudiger has been a force in Chelsea’s defence and will be missed.
