From Bad to Worse as Genoa Captain Criscito Set to Leave

Struggles So Far for Serie A Side

Genoa currently find themselves 19th in Serie A with just one win all season. It has been nothing short of a nightmare for the Italian outfit, who have already had three managers this season.

Davide Ballardini began the season in charge but was sacked in December after managing only one victory. A month later, former AC Milan and Ukraine legend Andriy Shevchenko took the hot seat.

Shevchenko only lasted two months. He failed to win in Serie A and only won once in the Coppa Italia against fellow league strugglers Salernitana.

Currently in charge is German Alexander Blessin. Genoa are currently four games unbeaten since Blessin has taken charge, drawing every match.

Departure of Genoa Captain Will be a Huge Blow

Losing Criscito will be a massive blow for Genoa. Despite playing centre-back, Criscito is the club’s second top scorer this season. He has managed six goals in 16 games. Mattia Destro currently leads the scoring charts with just nine.

Criscito knows Genoa incredibly well, playing at the club as a youth as well as making over 250 appearances for the club.

Despite not playing every game, Criscito is a leader on and off the pitch. Without him, the task of staying in Serie A will become a lot harder than it already is.

Genoa will hope that they can hold onto their captain until the end of the season, but with a new MLS season set to begin in March, Criscito may be keen to join Toronto before the campaign kicks off.

Too Little Too Late for Genoa?

Even if Criscito remains at the club, it may be too late for Genoa to save themselves. With just 12 games remaining in the Serie A season, it will take a miracle to avoid the drop.

Currently sat in 19th position on 16 points, Genoa are six points behind 17th placed Cagliari. With fixtures against Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio and AC Milan still to play, Genoa will need to dig deeper than they ever have in order to keep their Serie A status.
