Chelsea have a number of contracts on the verge of expiring, with some key players having the option to leave on a free. The majority of these come in the defensive areas, notably Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. The club are soon to open talks with academy graduate and key midfielder Mason Mount, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Chelsea Soon to Open Contract Talks with Midfielder Mason Mount
Renewals as Important as Signings
The resigning of current contracts is potentially just as important as new arrivals in West London. Mount is certainly at the heart of this. The Englishman is a key cog in Thomas Tuchel’s system. Mount has a multi-faceted game which can see him play either out wide or centrally whether it be in a two or three.
Midfielder Mason Mount’s Love for Chelsea Should See Him Stay
Tuchel will certainly be determined to hang on to Mount. At the same time, the 23-year-old seems very likely to remain at the Bridge given his love for the club. Mount may be from Portsmouth but from 2005, he has donned the iconic blue of Chelsea.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Mount’s current contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, so he has two more seasons after this one at least. That being said, Chelsea know more than most just how quick the contracts of these elite players can run down. Chelsea are looking to negotiate an extension this year to avoid future problems and it is easy to see why.
Mount is on the brink of hitting 100 appearances with the club. There is a lot for him to focus on right now, with the Champions League clash with Lille approaching as well as his side needing to play catchup in the Premier League title race. On top of this, the Qatar World Cup is coming up at the end of this calendar year, so one would imagine that a new contract isn’t at the top of the pecking order for Mount.
