According to Fabrizio Romano, Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans is not planing on signing a contract extension at the club. As things stand, that will leave the Belgian as a free agent in 2023. As per Romano, however, several top clubs are interested in signing him in the summer.
The report leaves Leicester in a difficult position. Do they cash in now? Or do they wait to lose Tielemans for free? The two questions will certainly be posed in the coming months, and an answer may have to be given sooner rather than later.
Youri Tielemans Not Planning on Signing Contract Extension at Leicester City
Adding to Leicester’s Woes
It’s fair to say that it’s been a season to forget for the Foxes. Brendan Rodgers’ side, having narrowly missed out on a place in the top four in the last two seasons, currently sit as low as 12th, with form looking unlikely to pick up before the campaign’s conclusion.
In truth, after a successful period at Leicester, it looks like Rodgers’ tenure has reached a point of stagnation. The former Liverpool boss looks out of ideas, and has been out of luck. Of course, injuries to key players such as Jonny Evans and Jamie Vardy haven’t helped, but when considering the summer of incomings that the Foxes had, they should, at the very least, be in the top half.
It is the aforementioned disappointment at the current campaign that could have led to Tielemans’ contract decision, too. The 24-year-old, who hasn’t been without his struggles, himself, this season, is nearing what many predict is a player’s peak. And with that in mind, and Leicester’s worsening downfall, he may feel as though now is the perfect time to move on.
At his best, the Belgium is a joy to behold. It’s just about re-discovering that best; something that may only be possible with a move up the football food chain.
