Sofyan Amrabat will not move to Tottenham Hotspur. The Dutch-born Moroccan is set to stay in Italy, with any potential move to Spurs now off the table.
Tottenham Target Sofyan Amrabat to stay in Italy
Sofyan Amrabat will not move to the Premier League this window
This development comes as a great disappointment to Antonio Conte. The manager at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium wanted the 25-year-old over any other available targets, but Rodrigo Bentancur was signed permanently in his place. According to Fabrizio Romano the deal collapsed. Amrabat was set to join the North London side but when teammate Erick Pulgar signed for Galatasaray the midfielder needed to stay put.
Conte will be very disappointed losing out on Amrabat. But there is nothing to say that Spurs cannot try again in the summer window. Amrabat was ready and willing to join Spurs, it was only the departure of Pulgar that scuppered the transfer.
Dutch-born Amrabat holds Moroccan citizenship. The midfielder has turned out for both the Netherlands (in his youth) and Morocco. Conte wanted to bring in Amrabat, desperately trying to get the signing over the line.
But for Pulgar leaving, Conte would have had his target man in his squad going forward. Unfortunately, it was not to be this time. The 25-year-old would have slotted nicely into the team, but Conte will have to put on hold the signature of Amrabat until at least the summer.
With Spurs overhauling their squad, Conte has tough decisions to make. Pursuits for players like Adama Traore who were thought to be perfect for the Italian manager’s system have failed. However, there are some positives to take from this January transfer window, with Spurs having signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, which is a coup in itself. The midfield is the target area for Conte, and Amrabat would have added to that.
