Steven Bergwijn Ajax Deal Falls Through, as Player Will Stay at Spurs
Bergwijn to Remain in North London
After talks of a return to Holland, Steven Bergwijn will not be leaving Spurs. The Dutchman’s return to the Eredivisie is now off, as Ajax and Spurs wanted £20 million for the player. Furthermore, manager Antonio Conte wants to keep the player, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 24 year-old has been linked with a move away from North London for sometime. However, it is now certain the former PSV player will be playing under Conte for the time being.
A return to his home country seemed to be on the cards for Bergwijn for a while. However, that prospect is all but over and now he can perhaps look forward to a strong run in the squad at Spurs.
A fresh Start Under Conte?
Ever since Antonio Conte was appointed Spurs manager, improvements have been visible. Just the one loss in their previous ten league games, their challenge for a UEFA Champions League spot is still on.
Additionally, it goes without saying that Steven Bergwijn has somewhat shined under the Italian manager.
Bergwijn scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 win against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup. He then scored a dramatic double in Spurs’ 3-2 win over Leicester City. Coming off the bench, Bergwijn equalised for Spurs in the final minute, but then scored his second and Spurs’ winner after Harry Kane played the Dutchman through. A moment which has endeared him to Spurs fans.
At this point, it appears as if Conte is a fan of Bergwijn. Spurs are in need of an attacking threat and this is where the Dutchman can come into play, if used correctly. It will be interesting to see if the Dutch international can now go on and thrive for Spurs this season.
