Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes is set to join Turkish giants Galatasaray on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.
It will be the second time the 23-year-old has temporarily joined the Istanbul-based club having spent the second half of the 2020/21 season with them.
Benfica Midfielder Gedson Fernandes Set for Second Galatasaray Spell
Third Loan Spell for Benfica Midfielder
Having made 18 appearances for Galatasaray last season, Gedson Fernandes’ return to Benfica has not gone to plan. He has made just four appearances in 2021/22 and it looks like the plan is to send him back to Turkish giants Galatasaray, for whom he scored once and assisted three goals.
Romano reports that Galatasaray have agreed to cover Fernandes’ full salary in an 18-month loan deal.
The midfielder, who has been capped by Portugal on two occasions, is no stranger to a loan move. This will be his third spell away from the Portuguese giants, the first being with Premier League Tottenham Hotspur in 2020/21.
He made 14 appearances for Spurs with little success.
Galatasaray Not Looking Good in Super Lig
This season has seen many of the top Turkish Super Lig teams suffering, with the likes of Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Istanbul Basaksehir outside of the top four, but none are as low down as Galatasaray in 15th.
Galatasaray are no doubt keen for reinforcements to turn their situation around as soon as possible.
Earlier in January, Fatih Terim was sacked as head coach five years into his fourth reign at the club. The 68-year-old was replaced by former Flamengo boss Domenec Torrent, who has previously worked alongside Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Galatasaray remain winless since his appointment.
Fernandes last played for Benfica in November 2021, though, was included on the bench just two weeks ago.
