David Neres Joins Shakhtar Donetsk From Ajax
Deal Could See Ajax Move for Steven Bergwijn
With the transfer of Neres now completed it could well lead to Ajax firming up their own interest in bringing Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn to the club. Ajax have been interested in Bergwijn for some time but have needed to sell players before making their own moves in the January transfer window.
Tottenham are believed to want to try and recoup as much of their £27 million fee for Bergwijn as possible which is what they paid for him two seasons ago when he joined the North London side from PSV Eindhoven.
Confirmation From Ajax of Neres Departure
The official Ajax club website also confirmed the departure of Neres on Friday 14 January in a statement that said;
“Ajax and Shakhtar Donetsk have reached an agreement for the transfer of David Neres. The transfer to the Ukrainian club is effective immediately.”
The player, who is 24, moved to Ajax in the same transfer window period in 2017 from his home country when he played for São Paulo. Since joining Ajax he has scored 47 goals in 180 appearances in all competitions.
In his time at Ajax, Neres won the domestic league and cup double on two occasions in 2019 and 2021 as well as winning the Johan Cruyff Shield.
Ajax will now focus their efforts on Bergwijn but Tottenham want to ensure they have a replacement before selling and are reported to be interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Adama Traore. As we’ve seen in the transfer window before, certain deals could have a domino effect.
