Chris Wood has officially completed his move to Newcastle United. The forward joins from Burnley for a reported fee of £25 million and becomes the second signing in the Magpies’ new Saudi-backed era, joining Kieran Trippier as another of the likely many arrivals at St James’ Park that can be expected during the January transfer window.
The transfer comes as a slight surprise considering the league table. Newcastle sit level on points with Sean Dyche’s men in 19th, below on goal difference. Ironically enough, too, it could be Wood’s goals that make all the difference in the relegation battle.
Following Callum Wilson’s injury, a forward was a must for Eddie Howe. Now with Wood secured – an experienced striker in the battle to avoid the drop – the Magpies will be hoping to rise up the Premier League standings.

Better Times Ahead for Newcastle United?
Under new ownership – the richest ownership in the Premier League, it must be said – brighter times should be ahead for Newcastle. It was obvious that they would struggle until the January window opened, and they did just that. Just a couple of weeks into the window, however, and they have secured to solid targets.
If they can get Wood scoring right away, then we could see instant improvement. We know from Eddie Howe’s time at Bournemouth that he knows how to get teams into a free-flowing goalscoring mood. And that will be a primary objective as he continues to welcome new talent.
Howe will know the extend of the task at hand, as will Wood, but will also be well aware of just how quick the Premier League can change.
The Newcastle boss has half a season to turn what is an increasingly sinking ship around. With plenty of resources at hand, too, he should be more than capable of keeping Newcastle afloat. Chris Wood will be hoping to play a key part in survival, too.
