Whilst Chelsea are currently scrambling to make up for recent injuries in their defensive line and the prospect of losing Antonio Rudiger, the club has kept their eye towards the future by completing the signing of 16-year-old defender Travis Akomeah from Watford. While there is no official announcement from the club, Fabrizio Romano has reported on the transfer.
Chelsea Sign Travis Akomeah
Blues at Top of the Game in Attracting Young Talent
The Blues reportedly beat out a number of other Premier League teams to sign Akomeah with Liverpool and Championship leaders Bournemouth reportedly having an interest in the young center-back, although Arsenal and Norwich City were also linked with the defender. Travis Akomeah has already been capped by England at youth level but could still choose to play for Ghana in the international game.
Where Does Travis Akomeah Slot In?
Akomeah is likely to play for Chelsea at youth level before joining the affectionately dubbed ‘loan army’ to gain experience. Whether he can make the breakthrough to the first team or not remains to be seen but at 16 years of age he is a smart investment for the club that could make a profit on him in the future, create a star or both.
More Pressing Matters
While Chelsea has been able to get Akomeah in the door they are still trying to gain a replacement for Ben Chilwell, who is set to miss the rest of the season due to injury. Thomas Tuchel has been tinkering with the team to find a replacement at the wing-back spot. As also reported by Fabrizio Romano, recalling Emerson Palmieri from his loan at Lyon is currently the club’s first-choice but the Ligue 1 side are yet to play ball and agree to the recall despite offers of compensation for the player.
