Former Rochdale boss Keith Hill has been announced as the new Scunthorpe United manager following the departure of Neil Cox.

The 52-year-old brings a wealth of experience to a club fighting for their Football League status.

Uphill Battle

Scunthorpe sit bottom of League Two after 15 games this season. They’ve won just two of them, drawing five and losing eight. They are only one point adrift of the two sides above them – Oldham Athletic and Carlisle United.

The club have turned to a manager with bags of experience to keep them in the Football League.

Hill’s most successful periods as a manager both came with Rochdale. Hill started his career with Rochdale as caretaker manager in 2006, going on to last over four years and overseeing their promotion from League Two in 2010.

The manager, who also represented Rochdale in his playing days, returned to the club in 2013 following a stint with Barnsley. Once again, he gained promotion to League One in 2014 and eventually left the club in 2019.

Since, he has been in charge at Bolton Wanderers and most recently Tranmere Rovers, where he was sacked despite reaching the play-offs.

At Scunthorpe, he has a survival job on his hands but if he can get them going the task is not so daunting with plenty of clubs down the bottom and in a 46 game league, so long to go.

First Order of Business

Hill will have to wait until Saturday, November 13 to get going in League Two as Scunthorpe are faced with hosting Doncaster Rovers twice in one week.

Firstly, they host Rovers on November 6 in the FA Cup first round and then on November 9 in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Perhaps, it could be a good opportunity to learn more about his new squad without letting valuable league points slip.

His first League Two fixture will see Scunthorpe United host Salford City at Glanford Park. Salford find themselves struggling in 19th and will be desperate to pick up three points.
