Pedri Extends Barca Stay
Pedri will turn 19 in November and has already made ten appearances for Luis Enrique’s Spain side.
The talent, who Barcelona signed from Las Palmas in September 2019, featured at both Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics.
Pedri has become a regular fixture in Ronald Koeman‘s side, though has only made two La Liga appearances in 2021/22, with absences owing to a muscle injury.
Important for Barcelona to Keep Hold of Him
Having lost Lionel Messi in the summer and struggling badly on the field, Barcelona must keep talents like Pedri. They are the key to the future of the club now with the well-reported financial issues that led to Messi’s departure.
Barcelona are ninth in La Liga, five points off the top and with a game in hand on seven of the eight teams above them.
The crisis is far greater than it seems in the league table with the gap to the top not too great. But, Barcelona have failed to win in more than half of their league games so far and to make matter worse, they’ve lost both Champions League outings to Bayern Munich and Benfica by three goals to nil.
Koeman stresses the need for patience as the return to the top will see the club rely on their younger players. Whether Barcelona buy into that, in the long run anyway, remains to be seen, but the former Netherlands boss needs them to if he is going to be a success in Spain.
Following the international break, Barcelona host Valencia on Sunday, October 17, 2021 and then look to get three points on the board in the Champions League, welcoming Dynamo Kyiv to the Nou Camp in midweek.
