Matty Cash Set to Be Approached by Poland – Decision to Make
Polish Interest in 2019
Born in Slough, England, Matty Cash always had dreams of representing England. However, his mother is half-Polish and his grandparents were born in Poland. Hence, Cash is eligible to try and acquire a Polish passport to play for the Polish national team. In 2019, scouts for the then Polish national team manager Jerzy Brzeczek attended several Nottingham Forest matches after learning about Cash’s family background. The possibility of Cash representing Poland in Euro 2020 was raised and the defender was apparently open to the idea. Despite some conversations between The Polish Football Association and Cash’s agent, the matter did not see sufficient progress.
Fresh Interest
As Gareth Southgate seems to have a plethora of right-backs at his disposal, it seems near impossible for Matty Cash to play for the three lions. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James all regularly feature for England these days. Besides, the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tariq Lamptey, Kyle Walker-Peters, and James Justin are waiting in the wings as well. Perhaps encouraged by that, the Polish Football Association seems set to approach Cash again now. However, some Polish sources are doubting this. Jakub Kwiatkowski, Media Officer of Polish Football Association said: “I see that English journalists ‘know’ more about what is happening in the Polish team. There was and there is no subject of Matthew Cash’s game in the Polish national team. The topic cannot be, because Cash does not have Polish citizenship”.
The Last Word
Matty Cash is a decent full-back and can do well for Poland. As he is unlikely to get a chance to play for England, he could very well decide to represent Poland. In fact, Cash could make his debut as early as next month when World Cup qualifiers resume.
