Arsenal Women have signed former Manchester United Women forward Tobin Heath.
The USWNT star was a free agent and represents a coup signing for The Gunners.
Tobin Heath Joins Arsenal Women
Staying in England
The 33-year-old joined Manchester United alongside her USWNT teammate Christen Press on a one-year deal last summer. Unfortunately for Heath and United supporters, Tobin was injured in the middle of the 2020/21 campaign, significantly damaging United’s chances of Champions League qualification. That injury also meant she never sported the Manchester red colours again.
She will now wear the North London red of Arsenal.
Heath is said to be an Arsenal fan and the opportunity to play in the Champions League again was obviously an attractive proposition.
Manchester United – in Heath’s absence – fell short by a point to The Gunners – which leaves one imagining whether had they finished in reverse, she might have stayed at Leigh Sports Village.
Christen Press, who arrived in Manchester alongside her, has since returned to the United States – joining Angel City FC in a dream move for her, returning to her home city, Los Angeles.
Arsenal Keen to Strengthen in Pursuit of Success
Heath, a two-time World Cup winner, was easily the best player on the pitch for Manchester United when she played last season. She has recovered from her injury, featuring in the Olympics for USWNT. Arsenal are making a huge statement with their additions this summer, especially after securing Heath’s services for free.
Having already brought former Manchester City Women winger Nikita Parris back to England from Lyon Women, they are going from strength to strength.
The club, who play their home games at Meadow Park, are under new management this summer with ex-boss Joe Montemurro leaving and eventually joining Juventus Women.
Swedish coach Jonas Eidevall replaced him as the Arsenal head coach and has had a good start, winning three games out of three in the Champions League qualifying rounds. His side head to Slavia Prague on September 9, 2021, with a 3-0 lead.
Eidevall told arsenal.com: “Tobin’s record speaks for itself. She’s an incredibly talented player who will bring so much experience to our squad. This is an exciting time for the club, and I’m delighted we could secure Tobin’s signing as we prepare to kick off the new season at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.”
Heath will only strengthen what is already a pretty lethal attack.
She has been given the number 77 shirt.
