As per David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea are actively working to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid. The news comes just a couple of hours after reports suggested that the deal had gone cold. Since then, however, things have certainly heated up again. The Blues are negotiating a loan with an option to buy the midfielder. And, as stated by Ornstein, there is a general optimism that a deal can get done.
The news really highlights the back-and-forth nature of Transfer Deadline Day. One moment, a deal looks unlikely to happen. The next, and there is an optimism around the completion of it.
Chelsea Actively Working to Sign Saul Niguez
Potential to Have World’s Best Midfield
Already European champions, Chelsea didn’t need to do much in regards to improvements this summer. The only position that really needed strengthening was the frontline. So, who did they sign? Romelu Lukaku, the new king of Italy before he re-joined the Blues in London. Once that deal was done, Roman Abramovic could have sat back, knowing that he’d built a side ready to compete for every honour. Instead, he simply looked for that little bit extra.
Saul would add the cherry on top of this Chelsea side, and help form potentially the best midfield in the world. Thomas Tuchel already has the UEFA midfielder of the year, N’Golo Kante and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, Jorginho, at his disposal, not to mention the equally classy Mateo Kovacic. They don’t need Saul, but the fact they want to get him shows a serious sign of intent.
In Premier League title races, one player can make the difference. Virgil van Dijk made that impact for Liverpool; Ruben Dias for Manchester City; Diego Costa for Chelsea in the past. Now, it is Saul who, if he completes the move, could take the Blues back to the English throne.
