Premier League club Burnley are in talks to sign Welsh defender Connor Roberts from Championship side Swansea City. Sean Dyche is now hoping to complete the deal ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Wales Online and Sky Sports report that Roberts, one of the standout performers in the Championship last season, has played his last game for the Swans with Burnley the clear favourites to sign the right-back.

Clarets Looking to Strengthen at Right-Back

Burnley manager Sean Dyche already has several players who can play at right-back; however, it is believed that he is looking at not just another player to compete for the position but someone who could play there for years to come.

Dyche currently has Matt Lowton and Phil Bardsley competing for the right-back role, but, both are now in their thirties. A move for a younger player like Roberts who is currently 25-years-old and is also a current international, would make sense in both the long and short term.

Dyche was giving little away when he was asked about any possible transfers before the deadline at 11 pm on Tuesday. Following the recent signing of Maxwel Cornet, Dyche said: “We have a couple of maybes and we will see how they develop over the next few days.”

Who is Connor Roberts?

The current Wales international, who played in all of his country’s games at Euro 2020 is a product of the Swansea City academy. Following loan moves at Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers and Middlesbrough, the right-back made his City debut in 2018 in the FA Cup followed by several Premier League games.

Since their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2017/18 season, Roberts has been a key player in their attempts to return to the top flight. He is currently on 152 games for the Swans, in which he has scored 11 goals. Roberts is also a regular for the Wales national team where he has 30 caps scoring twice.
