Championship side Birmingham City have completed the signing of Watford captain Troy Deeney. The veteran forward signs having spent just over a decade at Watford, with a small two-year absence in between.
Dropping down a level from the Premier League, Deeney will be aiming to hit the ground running at Birmingham, surprising a few in the process. At 33, of course, the forward is not in his prime, but, it must be said, he can still cause plenty of problems for defenders.
Deeney’s leadership off the pitch must also be reiterated. Even if he is low down in the pecking order, his influence can be unmatched when it comes to galvanising a side.

Watford Must Find New Leader
A move away from Watford has been on the cards all summer for Troy Deeney, with the newly-promoted side hoping to enter a prolonged period in the Premier League, and the captain not getting any younger. Despite his lack of influence on the pitch, however, he would have still been considered a vital part of the Watford dressing room. He was the leader; the experienced head in difficult situations. Now, though, that is gone and the Hornets must turn to someone else to lead.
Whether it was a smart move to let such an important figure leave in their first season back in the top flight remains to be seen. On paper, letting a 33-year-old go is a wise decision. In reality, it could prove to be detrimental to the dressing room, especially if Xisco Munoz fails to replace him.
Of course, no matter what happens, Troy Deeney will forever be a Watford legend. He’s earned as much during his time at Vicarage Road. When you think of Deeney, you think of one iconic moment, and that is the late winner to send Watford through to the play-off final in 2012/13.
