The Uruguayan Returns to Italy
After three years, Lucas Torreira is back in Italy. The Uruguayan returns to the league where he made a name for himself after leaving Sampdoria to join Arsenal in 2018. Torreira has struggled to adjust to the demands of English football despite an impressive debut season for the Gunners. The midfielder was a regular starter in the first-team under Unai Emery, but Torreira has struggled to land a regular spot in the lineup following the departure of the Spaniard. The last two seasons have seen Torreira shipped out on loan by Mikel Arteta.
Torreira has reportedly always nurtured the idea of once returning to Italy. A product of Montevideo Wanderers, the midfielder moved to Italy in 2015 to join Pescara on loan. The Uruguayan spent just a single season with Pescara before catching the eye of Sampdoria. After spending his first season on loan back with Pescara, the Uruguayan quickly became a part of the Sampdoria squad in his first full season with the club. Torreira spent two seasons with Sampdoria before crossing the North Sea to join Arsenal.
The Uruguayan has spent three seasons with Arsenal following his move. During this period, Torreira has made 89 appearances and scored four goals. The arrival of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid pushed Torreira further down the pecking order. The midfielder spent last season away on loan in Spain with Atletico. Torreira made 26 appearances and scored one goal as he helped the club reclaim the La Liga title.
