Fine Premier League Start Earns Recall for Greenwood and Trent Alexander-Arnold
Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has had an impressive start to the season, scoring in both United’s Premier League fixtures. Greenwood missed out on the Euros after withdrawing from England’s provisional 33 man squad due to a groin injury. He hasn’t played for his country since September 2020, when he was sent home after breaching coronavirus protocols.
Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold looks back to his best after a disappointing season by his high standards. However, he faces stiff competition for the right-back role with Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, and Reece James competing for the spot.
Expect No Surprises in Southgate’s Selection
England boss Gareth Southgate is unlikely to deviate too much from the squad that reached the European Championship final.
Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden will both be missing due to injury while goalkeeper Dean Henderson is likely to miss out as he tries to build up his fitness after contracting covid.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli could be in line for his first England call-up since 2019. The 25-year-old has had an impressive start to the season. After missing the Euros, James Ward-Prowse, Ben White, and Burnley keeper Nick Pope could be recalled.
England Looking to Build on Euros
England will be facing their first matches since their penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. They have made an impressive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, winning their first three games and conceding just once.
They will face a tough test against Hungary in Budapest on 2 September. The Hungarians showed in the Euros that they are a tough nut to crack after securing draws against France and Germany.
Southgate’s side will expect an easier assignment against Andorra three days later at Wembley. They conclude their triple-header against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland. England should be expecting a minimum of seven points out of nine. If they do that they virtually secure their place at the World Cup finals next winter.
